I want to take some time in promoting a site in which you can actually help out a person in need. She is Yvonne Foong, a very intelligent and hardworking person. Unfortunately, she has been combatting health difficulties in recent years as she faces a rare sickness making losing her eyesight currently. Tumours growth makes her living difficult and hard to determine which day she might have to drop down. Below is an excerpt of her conditions:

When she was only 16, doctors diagnosed her with a rare genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis Type 2. Curious schoolteachers and friends could only observe, as the former ballet dancer, figure skater, karate fighter and Soprano in the school choir suffered sudden health deteriorations that robbed her bodily capabilities.

In her thirteenth year when the first symptoms arise, Yvonne became deaf in the right ear, and soon had difficulty balancing. The unexpected turn of events were strange and unbelievable. In the next three years, Yvonne suffered in silence, swallowing the ill-fate in a gulp and roughed through tough times alone, when no one paid serious attention to her pleas for medical attention.

To date, Yvonne has undergone 1 spine and 3 brain surgeries. The first two were done at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital where she suffered the consequences of reckless and ill-informed doctors. Besides that, the lack of experience among local doctors proved unhelpful in treating tumours caused by Neurofibromatosis Type 2.

As such, Yvonne is determined to seek medical treatment abroad. Her life took another twist upon meeting a kind Neurotologist named Dr. Rick A. Friedman, who did her third surgery for free. The opportunity broadened Yvonne’s perspective towards the world of medicine, and her life became hopeful once again.

The fourth surgery, which was to remove another brain tumour that robbed her residual hearing in 2005, was successfully done by Dr. Friedman in Los Angeles. For this surgery, Yvonne together with her friends and kind members of the public raised the cost by selling t-shirts and accessories, and by organising various fundraising events. The first 10 months of selling, giving speeches, appearing in newspapers and magazines, and dealing with stress was not easy, but for a better quality of life, the effort was definitely worthwhile.

Please help spread the word for her if you can. For readers in China, and if your family members can help her in anything, please do so. Her medical bills are very expensive and hard to upkeep. Malaysia proclaiming 50 National heritage status as celebration of half century Independence

In conjunction to 50 years of Independence, Malaysia announces that it will proclaim fifty national treasures in the form of buildings, historical sites, objects and cultural practices as National heritage. They will be officially conferred Warisan Kebangsaan or National Heritage status.

Among the list to be converted as National Heritage are The Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, the Merdeka Proclamation read by Tunku Abdul Rahman at Stadium Merdeka on Aug 31, 1957, the Parliament building, the wayang kulit, mak yong, sewang, ngajat, sumazau and Joget Melayu are among the national treasures expected to be elevated from Heritage to National Heritage status.

China nod for Asian heritage perspective

If most people do not know, UNESCO formed their guidelines to approved their World Heritage lists based on their committee members mainly constituted of European countries. Most of such guidelines were formed straight after the 2 World Wars which devastated our heritage globally, making us lose many valuable treasure Man created in thier History make civalization.

Recently, China and Malaysia raises issues in concern to the guidelines whether Asian countries should follow the same methods follow by the western counterparts. As beliefs and values defers countries to countries, regions to regions, some of the Chapters and guidelines offered by UNESCO might not be catered to the needs of Asian countries. Facing such issues, Japan raises their voices in accordance to the meaning of authencity and wrote the Declaration of Authentication in Nara Chapter as a guideline. It raises certain issues in which heritage can be intangible, and preservation of building in accordance to what it is does not mean as much as the intangible factor in which spirit, values, culture, customs might hold the foundation to the foundation of what A national of ethinic value might believe in. This is due to their belief that their Shinto Temple can be rebuilt, but their beliefs go beyond just a simple Architecture in form.

The Kiwis believes that their heritage site should be left to nature, in which if the nature deems their houses should be decayed and return to Mother Nature, so be it. This is a code of conduct and respect to the nature in which they deeply believed in.

Poland was razed and destroyed during the world war. However, their city made it into the World Heritage Site as well because it goes beyond physical form, but the outreach of their fighting spirit and strong National Identity to the world.

Still, we must take note that nothing is simple, and daily we are facing loss in heritage all over the world, whether it is the last ethinic race, the last form of communication and culture, or the last folk song known in a region. Time is the essence in preventing further loss. But we all have our own limitations in how much we can do.

If there should be further implications and chapters added into the guidelines, and if it is for a good cause, I feel it will always be beneficial to the world globally. After all, everything is about preseving our own uniqueness and not be tainted too much by the effects of globalisation.

However, we must always consider backwards: are all this done for commercial purposes, political purposes? How many times a site enlisted falls into bad management? How many times it all fall back into an empty pit in which so much more were lost due to the enlistment? I welcome all comments in relation to this topic. Let's hope what Malaysia is doing is not solely because they want to promote Malaysia Tourism Year 2007.

KUALA LUMPUR: China supports Malaysia’s stand that Asian countries be assessed according to their own criteria for Unesco's Heritage Cities listing.

China’s Culture Minister Sun Jiazheng said Unesco should look at the Asian perspective when according such status, based on the specific environmental, historical, geographical locations and the nature of cultural heritages of the countries in Asia.

Sun, who headed a delegation that paid a courtesy call on Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim at the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex here on Friday, said Asian countries, which shared many similarities, should work together to ensure that Unesco accepts the suggestion by Malaysia.

On Thursday, Dr Rais had raised Malaysia's proposal to China for Asia to have its own version of “Unesco” to accord such status but the matter has yet to be decided as the Eastern Ministers of Culture have not met.

Dr Rais said there should be specific criteria for Asian countries, and that it was not right for Unesco to compare Asia to the Western nations.

“Our suggestion will be handed over to Unesco soon. It is important to give them an idea on how differently Asian countries look at artefacts or heritage sites, compared to European and other non-Asian countries.

“If there is a benchmark set for Asian countries, we will have more heritage sites,” he told reporters after receiving the Chinese delegation.

Dr Rais said he discussed training programmes related to culture and heritage with Sun, adding that China had vast experience in the conservation of buildings, cultural and heritage artefacts.

KUCHING: Sarawak’s ethnic communities celebrated the Gawai Dayak Open House last night with a colourful show of traditional cultures.

Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu lasses and warriors in full regalia welcomed Sarawak Governor Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng, Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and state ministers at the State Indoor Stadium here.

Among the highlights was a 30-strong Kelabit bamboo band from the Baram region in northern Sarawak.

Cultural troupes which took to the stage with their traditional dances included a group of elderly Bidayuh women from the remote village of Kampung Semban in Ulu Padawan near here.

They wore distinctive metal coils on their arms and legs, a decorative element of their traditional costume unique to their village.

There was also a musical dance-drama and a parade of beauty contestants, known as “Kumang”, in three categories – Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu.

World Heritage City status sought for Penang

Guess what? Malaysia is attempting to enlist Penang inside World Heritage List, something in which I think Singapore will need a long time before they can attempt to do so. "We are all Kiah-See people, must be confirm plus guarantee plus chop chop before we will do it." In other words, we are slower than people by one clap, but we still are pioneers in everything to ensure our continual survival as a small country in the world economically.

Enlisting Penang into World Heritage List, of course, is good news to me. As a South-East Asian, I am deeply rooted to the culture and society we live in. We are basically immigrants from other countries like China, India, Indonesia and other regions around the world that came over in the past 150 years. Our society forms a rich diversity in which we have cross marriages of Indian-Chinese, Indian-Malay, Indonesian-Chinese and Asia-Western. This cultural bongings cross overs created different form of changes in relation to food culture, living styles, religions, values..etc and created a unique icon in which we deemed ourselves Asians. We preserve our own unique identity and even morph ourselves to stand out globally.

Penang, a small city has also recorded many such beauty seen from immigrants coming over from Southern provinces of China. The food from Penang has adopted to the flavours locally, varying differently from those outside the region. At the same time however, Penang recorded and maintained many cultures and customs that might not be practice in China anymore due to the raise of the Cultural Revolution in the 60s.

But one thing for sure raises our eyebrows when looked upon pre-enlisting as World heritage Cities.

It is not a matter of politics, economics or for the sake of tourism. Yes you can boom everything up for the sake of enriching your nation's needs. But are you ready for such enlistment? There are much chapters involved in which are you able to protect and preserve your unique identity. Is the local ready to accept their role in preserving their own uniqueness? Will things be lost along the way due to pressure from tourism and economics?

You also need to consider how much money you have to fork in in restorations and preservation of such identities. There are also intangible things to consider. Will it be lost along the way? I believe that the current generation in which I am born in, most of us cannot even speak our own dialects, or relate things to it with ease.

Start with bring awareness. There are many things not needed to be rush. Especially heritage. Do proper plannings. do proper research. Find your own strengths. Find your own identity. We do not need another over-commercialised site listed. We do not need another city falling in into the hands of pure capitalism.

And if you are really ready and decided, and you know you can really shows the colours and beauty of your beautiful city Penang, yes by all means do so! I will be proud as an Asian to see it listed!

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is hopeful that Penang and Malacca will be accorded World Heritage Cities status.

Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the status was mostly accorded to places in Europe and non-Asian countries and thus Unesco might tend to compare Penang and Malacca with these places.

“I hope Unesco will not compare us to places like the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the Pyramids. We have asked Unesco to look at us in the Asian perspective. We hope Penang will soon gain the status, followed by Malacca,” he said.

Dr Rais added that Malaysia had proposed to China for Asia to have its own version of “Unesco” to accord such status but the matter has not been decided upon as the Eastern Ministers of Culture have yet to meet.

He said it was timely that Penang was the venue of the 20th Malaysian Film Festival just as it was vying for the status. The festival will be held at Dewan Canselor Tunku Syed Putra in Universiti Sains Malaysia on Aug 4.

Kelantan inviting archaeological researchers

KOTA BARU: Kelantan is inviting researchers to ascertain archaeological findings that claim that the oldest form of civilisation in Malaysia, besides the oldest human fossils and artefacts, were located in the state.

This will put to rest ongoing debates over where civilisation originated from in the country, state museum board chairman Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said.

"Some say the Perak Man is the oldest (10,000 years-old) but we have research evidence to indicate that civilisation began here (Ulu Kelantan) some 12,000 years ago," he said after opening a month-long archaelogical exhibition of the Nenggiri Ulu Valley, which is a Masters research study of National Museum and Antiquities Department director-general Datuk Dr Adi Haji Taha here.

He said the state would welcome input from all, including international researchers and historians to ascertain the claims.

Nenggiri Ulu, which is part of Ulu Kelantan, now called Gua Musang, has a cave system where evidence of neolithic life has been found and the present orang asli community are said to be their descendents.

According to Takiyuddin, research done has unveiled strong suspicions that there was a a pre-Islamic Malay Kingdom in Ulu Kelantan from where the legendary Princess Ruler of Kelantan - "Puteri Saadon" - originated from.

This raised questions over whether the preception that the oldest civilisation should was in Perak or Malacca, were accurate, Takiyuddin said.

The findings from various caves in Gua Musang, could help provide answers to questions that have long intrigued scholars of Kelantan's early history, Takiyuddin said.

He said the state was also seeking to reclaim some of its artefacts currently located at the Cambridge University in England.

Takiyuddin also announced that a local university student is conducting research to acertain if the Chinese settlement in Pulai, Gua Musang, is the oldest settlement for the Oriental folks in Malaysia.

If there is an effort to provide conclusive evidence, Kelantan's place in Malaysia would take a different dimension and bring value to its standing as the cradle of Malay culture, Takiyuddin said.

It can boost more archaeological works besides offering spin-off opportunities in tourism and culture, Takiyuddin said.

In a related development, Takiyuddin said the state plans to establish an artefacts museum in Gua Musang soon to coincide with the "Visit Kelantan 2008" campaign.

He said the state will work with the national museums department to facilitate the process including ensuring that the museum setting is situated next to the cave system there.

For those of you who do not know, the situation in Johore Bahru, Malaysia, is that secuirty is bad due to many robbery happening in that region. Most of the cases happening were done by immigrants coming from indonesian. This immigrants came in illegally or was hired as construction workers. Minimum salary could have forced this people to lead a criminal life. Also, these could also depict a situation in which many offenders continue to carry out such offences many times due to the fact that government is not reacting to it seriously. I believe the locals also form their own syndicate to carry out such crimes. Besides robbery, they kill people and rape women in their robbery attempts. Whatever it is, I seriously hope that Johore Bahru will be a safer place to stay, as well as many other states of Malaysia should enforce and improve the situation across the Nation.

JOHOR BARU: His house has been broken into twice and even his 11-year-old son had been held up when robbers raided his tuition teacher’s house.

So when businessman Teh Kee Sin heard about the Cabinet’s directive to increase policemen in the city, he breathed a sigh of relief.

“They should send out the army too,” he said.

Teh said many residents were living in fear, as anyone could be the next victim of crime.

“It is very worrying. It makes us very fearful. Even to go to the car porch, my son carries an umbrella or a golf club. He was traumatised after the robbery last year. I am sure other crime victims are, too,” he said.

Teh, who is also the Southern Johor Small and Medium Industries Association president, said potential investors were sceptical about venturing into Johor Baru due to its reputation as a hotspot for crime.

“Businessmen, especially those from Singapore and abroad, tell me that unless we solve the crime issue they are not too keen on investing here,” he said.

Some resident associations have resorted to hiring guards to protect their homes. In Serene Park, six guards patrol the neighbourhood on motorcycles from 9pm daily.

Serene Park Neighbourhood Watch committee chairman Raymond Koh said it was impossible to expect the police to watch over every area in the city 24 hours a day.

“We have had very good success in keeping crime in check through our patrols. If our guards see any suspicious characters, they do not confront them, but alert the police immediately,” he said, adding that the police always responded quickly.

“The system works for us and is worth the money spent,” he said.

It is quite hilarious looking at the comments of some locals. Militant to be called upon to curb such issues? Yes, maybe. Malaysia got National Service, no? But oh, too short. Roll picking did not ensure most Malaysians to go through National Service. With only 3 months of training, they were built to know basic military training. This differs in Singapore, where all our kuniang bengs must go through 2 years of service. The government even situate Police and Army National Service Men in important landmarks like Changi Airport as a call against international secuirity. But local unrest is not terrorism. I think the first step that Malaysia should look upon is do a stoppage on such crimes, heighten the levels of trust in the society by eliminating all this unwanted crimes. How many of us Singaporeans went over to Malaysia by our own transport the past few years to have our cars and motorcycles stolen? Now what, we might even lose our lives or get our arms amputated? Worse, if our love ones go along, they get raped and mutilated?

If private services are needed to hire securities to prevent such crimes, yes go ahead. We just want to see a more stable society and weekends trips to Malaysi possible without any fears and hindrance. This year you all promoting Malaysia Tourism 2007 right? Do it with pride then!

On ethics, transparency, and events evolving around...

Let's put down the situations faced recently over a couple of months by people I know:

Friend A, a Malaysian, walked into the Consulate General of Malaysia, Shanghai one day. His intention was to apply visa for a Chinese National friend for a trip to West Malaysia. Upon asking what was the fees charged for visa application, it was quoted 400RMB. Friend A paid for the fees. Later, he found out the fees needed for such a visa cost only 80RMB to be exact. He was furious, and went back to the Consulate and demand an explaination. Friend B, who worked inside the Consulate knew that the Chinese national in-charge of the visa application pocketed the money. Now look at the scenario, for everyone who went to apply for Visa, 400-80 = 320 RMB pocketed. If everyday, 10 people went to apply for visa to Malaysia, that will be 3200RMB pocketed, equalling to 1600 ringgit and 640 SGD respectively. One month down the road, cheebye you go calculate, how much lui he pocketed. Why issit that he is able to do it? Is it because there are people inside who also know about the situation, and they are sharing profit from it? Or is it because he holds power and authority within and nobody dares to touch him? Or issit I am given wrong information? o.O

Friend B, who worked in the Consulate, knew that there was an Job application for the role of General Manager available in Consulate of Malaysia, Shanghai. MISS CHINA POWER who was in charge of interviewing possible applicants rejected all applicants, saying that they were not qualified for the role. After a long period of time in which the job remain vacant, the big head[dua tao] in Shanghai asked where are all the right-in resumes, the one responsible said that all the applicants' information were missing. Friend B, knew however, that this was not true. He knew where those applicant's resume were kept. Being, a small fry in the consulate. He decided to remain dumb about the situation. Eventually, MISS CHINA POWER became the general manager of Consulate General Malaysia Shanghai, hiring herself a LESS QUALIFIED STAFF TO BE HER ASSISTANT. Strangely, this time the applicant's resume never disappear. Power right, now one more cheebye kia in control of power, Consulate can be rightfully said still belonged to Malaysia meh?

I know of some Malaysians who dance for events held by the Consulate General of Malaysia. They learnt and dance a couple of folk dances from Malaysia. They are paid each time they dance. On this situation, Miss China POWER decided that hiring Malaysians to dance is very expensive. She decided that in the long run the Malaysians will be replaced by local chinese instead. Her reasons was of course to save cost. Now, Miss China POWER may be doing the right thing. But, what about those Chinese Nationals who are already dancing in the group, does that mean their pay will be lesser? Then, when all the Malaysians don't dance anymore, if one day those who are newly hired.. their pay rise.. this one how to say? NO PORK I TELL YOU! Traditional dance dun let own country people dance, still considered as traditional dance meh? wo ga li kong, lu eh considerate eh name ai mai change to deng nangs considerate general? lu bor power liao lor.. ah thiongs take over your power liao. can dengz chuz liao balek kampong lorzz...

Friend C, another Malaysian, who is serving her internship in a production firm under AAA Airlines, recently approached the Consulate General of Malaysia for help. As Friend C was doing video production in relation tourism, she approached Friend B to submit the proposal to MISS CHINA POWER upon receiving the proposal, without considering whether it is of any beneficial value, rejected the proposal flat. She deemed it advertising gimmick on her own personal judgement. Friend C reluctantly resigned to the decision. However, she continued to try her best in reach out to the Malaysiam Tourism Board. She contacted Sabah about the proposal and Sabah showed interests. For those who do not know, Malaysia is currently promoting her tourism "Visit Malaysia 2007". MISS CHINA POWER dunno know what's she doing or not. Straight away reject without considering to the nation's benifit in promoting the event. You all can consider whether this is an abuse in authority and poor management and judgement skills.

What is the role of the embassy? It is to provide information and linking their citizens in foreign land. Cheebye, now all this kind of things happening seems to be disrupting the standard procedures in relieving and connecting people together. I tell you, if my Singapore embassy in Shanghai got this kind of things happening, ah thiongz more powerful and can make final judgements without discussing with my lao dao in Shanghai, I tell you i really got nothing to say but, ah thiong you super power. I must be recently feeling super dulanz about my inability to write properly due to the knn China ISP here. Maybe my views maybe biased. But still, there are certain elements in which we shoud look at here: Is it write to pocket money here, is it ethical to do things for your own benifits and practice neopotism here?

We can look further at this. Philippines embassy in Shanghai at least tried very hard to pomote thier tourism when Friend C contacted them in such cooperation activities. From lack of knowledge until they know what's going on. This was suppose to be the way in which a channel of proper dissemination of information can take place. I feel a crumbling sadness for those who are affected by such decision made my an alien not belong to the same citizenship. And I sincerely hope that it does not happen globally elsewhere in other embassies. We should take pride of our own nationality and not let others who dunno anything abuse and put effect on decisions of our own nation.

The rest of you all can do ur own brain searching. Maybe knn my blog will be blocked in China. I seriously dun want think so much, just continue to post what I see and hear.

Review: Advertlets Comes to Singapore

As I was browsing the web today for more ways in which I can improve my blog's access, I came upon Advertlets, a Malaysia-based web advertising company aiming for bloggers to promote their clients' advertisements.

Hey, it's good also, makes young people go practice their writing skills.
